Anita Alice Burns

Anita A. Burns, 73, of New Castle, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at St Vincent Hospital. She was born on September 10, 1943 in Sharpsburg, KY, a daughter of the late Harold and Elva Downs. Anita’s family moved to Henry County where she was raised and attended Cadiz High School. She worked at the State Hospital for many years before transferring to the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Children’s Home in Knightstown where she loved caring for the children. Anita enjoyed listening to Elvis music, she also loved cooking and dedicated her life to her family. Those left to cherish her memory include special friend of 30 years, Jerome Lewis of New Castle; devoted mother of John Burns of Anderson, Ron (wife: Janice) Burns of Decatur and Doug Burns of Muncie; step-children, Susan Melton, Cheryl (husband: Bruce) Marrow and Sheila (husband: Rickey) Imel all of New Castle and Jeremy Lewis of Muncie; grandchildren, Hailey (husband: Brad) Guidi, Lori (husband: Daniel) Mosgrove, JT (wife: Amber) Burns, Ciara Burns (friend: Adam Hensley), Jacob Burns, Lindsey Burns, Joshua Burns, Jessica (husband: Chris) Maier, Jordan Smith, Taylor Smith, Brittany (husband: Ben) Burris and Andrew Burns (fiancé: Krista Bumbalough); great-grandchildren, Lilly, Emmy, Brooklyn, Chase, Reid, Lucas, Cam, Oliver and Brileigh; brothers, Jim Downs and Jerry Downs; sisters, Beulah Lyall, Anna Workman, Barbara Addison and Hazel Seabolt and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Terry Burns; brothers, Billy Downs, Robin Downs and Curtis Downs and Jerome’s parents, Nathan and Mattie Lewis. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 10, 2016 at Sproles Family Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hills Memory Gardens. Family will receive friends from 2 – 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 9, 2016 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
