David J. Hiatt

David Jon Hiatt, 72, of Muncie, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on the afternoon of Monday, August 3, 2026, at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. His passing was unexpected due to medical complications. Even in death, Dave's generous spirit continued through the gift of organ donation, a final act of compassion that will bring hope and healing to others. Dave was born on July 31, 1954, in Logansport, Indiana, to the late Glen Wilber Hiatt and Frances Marie (Wilson) Hiatt. A 1972 graduate of Lewis Cass High School, Dave built a successful career spanning more than 25 years in banking and finance. He served as Vice President at Citizens National Bank in Tipton, Indiana, and later as Director of Finance for Cookson Hills Christian Ministries, a nonprofit organization in Kansas, Oklahoma. He was also the proud co-owner of Hiatt Realty. On February 14, 1989, Dave married the love of his life, Sue Campbell. Together they built a marriage firmly rooted in faith, love, and family, sharing 37 wonderful years together. They raised their two sons while making countless memories traveling across the United States in their RV. Their adventures led them to Oklahoma for several years before family drew them back home to Indiana. The boys saw 42 states and together, Dave and Sue fulfilled a lifelong dream of visiting all 50 states. Dave found great joy in God's creations traveling around the US; RVing, Jeeping and hiking—especially when those adventures were shared with his family. He treasured an unforgettable four-month RV journey with his extended family and all the memories they made together. He was a devoted fan of the Indianapolis 500 and faithfully cheered on the Indianapolis Colts each football season. In his younger years, he also enjoyed golfing. Dave possessed a curious mind and was a lifelong learner with a deep knowledge and love of Scripture. His quick wit and trademark sarcasm brought laughter to those around him, and his grandchildren affectionately knew him as "Grump-pa". More than anything, Dave loved his family. The bond he shared with his two sons was unbreakable. Together, they tackled countless projects, creating not only things with their hands but also memories that would last a lifetime. Whether they were working side by side, embarking on an adventure, or simply enjoying one another's company, they did life together as a family. Their home was filled with meaningful conversations, and Dave especially treasured the deep spiritual discussions they shared, encouraging his sons to grow in faith and wisdom. He cherished every opportunity to be with his family, and his unwavering love, guidance, and devotion to them will remain one of his greatest legacies. Those left to cherish Dave's memory include his beloved wife, Sue Hiatt; his sons, Ben (Amanda) Hiatt and Jacob (Lauren) Hiatt; his cherished grandchildren, Lainey, Norah, and Lynayah; and one precious grandchild expected soon. He is also survived by his sister, Lana Osenbaugh; his brother, Glen Hiatt; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. In addition to his parents, Dave was preceded in death by his sister, Joyce, and his brother, Alan Hiatt. A Celebration of Life will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Cadiz Christian Church in New Castle, with Pastor Jeff Johnson officiating. Friends may call from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service on Saturday at the church.
