Doris R Smith

Doris R. Smith, 79, of Plainfield, went home to be with the Lord early on the morning of Monday, October 9, 2017, at the Brownsburg Healthcare Center following a brief illness. She was born on February 14, 1938, in Girard Borough, in Erie County, Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late Robert R. and Nevada A. (Van Kirk) Burt. Doris was a 1956 graduate of Mount Carmel High School in Lawson, Kentucky. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from God’s Bible School and College in Cincinnati, Ohio and a Master of Education from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1972. Doris taught English in grades 7 - 12 in various schools in Southern Indiana. She also served as served as Assistant Dean of Women at God’s Bible School and College. She married Rev. Henry “Hank” Smith on July 2, 1977, and they pastored in the Louisville, Kentucky area and then moved to Plainfield, IN as the Associate Pastor of Calvary Bible Wesleyan Church. She and her husband invested much time in the outreach ministry of the church by visiting the elderly, sick and shut-in. She enjoyed playing the autoharp, crocheting and working puzzles. Doris is survived by two step-granddaughters, Crystal (husband: Harvey) McCarthy and Tammy Needy; two step-granddaughters, Molly and Sarah; two sisters, Dorothy Meyer of Newark, Ohio and Pat Sebastian of Hobe Sound, Florida, and a brother, Robert L. Burt of Louisville, KY and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Henry "Hank" Smith on October 30, 2015 and a step-daughter, Kahla Maree Smith. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 am Friday, October 13, 2017, at Resthaven Memorial Park, 4400 Bardstown Rd., Louisville, Kentucky, with Rev. Rollin Mitchell and Rev. Marcus Dodrill officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Sproles Family Funeral Home in New Castle.
