Eugene Benson

Eugene “Gene” Benson, 84, of New Castle, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, June 23, 2011 at Henry County Hospital following an extended illness. He was born April 24, 1927 in Saratoga, Indiana, a son of the late Harold and Esta (Gordon) Benson. Eugene retired in 1987 from Ford Motor Company following 31 years of employment. He owned the Texaco Station in Straughn from 1963 – 1965. He attended Park Place Free Methodist Church and for many years had attended Broad Street Alliance Church. Eugene enjoyed yard work and loved to golf, fish and camp. He was a loyal fan of the New Castle Trojans and Cincinnati Reds. He is survived by his companion, Doris Robertson of New Castle; two sons, Bobby (wife: Marcia) Benson and Rick (wife: Jeri) Benson both of New Castle; two grandchildren, Brenda (husband: Tim) Baker and Dawn (husband: Jon) Cunningham both of New Castle; six great-grandchildren, Dustin and Emily Baker, Douglas, Madison and Kaitlyn Cunningham, and Ashley (husband: Lane) Ross of Evansville; a great-great-grandchild, Mackinze Ross; a special little friend, Hailey Goodwin; a brother, Leonard (wife: Wanda) Benson of New Castle; four sisters, Maxine (husband: Jesse) Bailey of New Castle, Alvena (husband: Kenneth) McRoberts of Holiday, Florida, Betty Dunn of Elko, Nevada and Linda (husband: Monte) Johnson of New Castle; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine (Million) Benson; two sisters, Alberta Benson and Martha Bell Benson and one brother, Robert Benson. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 27, 2011 at Sproles Family Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Hickman officiating, assisted by the Revs Woody Kreuzinger and Ted Malone. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
