John E. Powell Sr.

John E. Powell Sr., 83, of Indianapolis, went home to be with the Lord on the morning of Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at Franciscan Health. He was born on July 17, 1941, in Wabash, Indiana, a son of the late Meade Glen and Sarah Ellen (Badger) Powell. John was a 1959 graduate of Wabash High School. He attended Frankfort Pilgrim College, where he met the love of his life, Beverly Ann DeSpain, whom he married on July 5, 1960. As a teenager, John was an excellent mechanic and learned electrical work in high school. He would utilize those skills throughout his life, doing electrical work as a part-time job and working on cars as a hobby. John felt a call to ministry and pastored churches for over 30 years. For many years, John also worked as a meat cutter for several grocery stores, including Kroger and Marsh. He enjoyed woodworking and, most of all, loved spending time with his family. Those left to cherish John’s memory include three children, John (Lorraine) Powell Jr. of Indianapolis, James (Pamela) Powell of Hobe Sound, FL, and Christy (David) Hartley of Bedford; seven grandchildren, Paul (Birdie) Turner, William (Alisha) Turner, Wayne (Holly) Turner, Tiffany (Robert) Helfrich, Joshua (Mamie) Powell, Bethany (Darin) Peters, and Ruthann Hartley; 14 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Beverly Ann Powell; a daughter and son-in-law, Wesena and Daniel Turner; and seven siblings, Audrey Harris, Everett Powell, Robert Powell, Irene Goins, Juanita Sartin, Leo Powell, and Richard Powell. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, November 8, 2024, at Oak Grove Cemetery, 8638 E. 700 S. Montgomery, IN 47558, with Pastor Don Bates, Jr., officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm Friday, November 8, 2024 at Oak Grove Church, located by the cemetery.
