Mary A. Jeffries

Mary A. Jeffries of New Castle passed away on the afternoon of Thursday, January 9, 2024, at the home of her daughter, Susan, in Indianapolis. Mary was 103 years, 7 months and 20 days old. She was born on May 20, 1921, in New Castle, Indiana, a daughter of the late Wayne and Matilda (Weaver) Hagerman. Mary was a 1939 graduate of New Castle High School. She married Robert L. Jeffries on October 11, 1941, and they enjoyed almost 67 years of marriage together until his death in 2008. Mary was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. Her family, extended family, and friends were what she called “my people,” and she lived for all of them. She listened intently to everyone and always put others' needs before her own. Although she was quiet in nature, she would surprise others with her dry wit and sense of humor. During her lifetime, she enjoyed playing golf, working on her computer, reading on her Kindle, mastering her smartphone, and always actively taking care of the inside and outside of the home she and her husband built on Road 50N in New Castle. As a Centurion, she grew her network of friends to include her new Indianapolis neighborhood, where she was the honorary Matriarch. Mary traveled to several places in her life, including almost every State in this country, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Costa Rica. Those left to cherish Mary’s memory include her two daughters, Phyllis (Larry) Dulworth of New Castle and Susan Hartling (Joe Faulkner) of Indianapolis; her son, Barry Jeffries of Eagle River, Alaska; her grandchildren (and like grandchildren), Christi (Comer) McCloud, Randy Laurie, Sandy (Brett) Strukel, Rick Laurie, Steve Laurie, Lily Laurie, Cohen Jeffries, Elle Jeffries, Stacy Neill, Shelley Faulkner, and Amber McGlothlin Ryan (John); 12 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Jeffries, and her siblings, Charles Hagerman, Sarah Jeffries, Frank Hagerman, Beulah Hill, James Hagerman, and George Hagerman. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, January 24, 2025, at Sproles Family Funeral Home. Burial will follow at South Mound Cemetery West Lawn Addition. Visitation will be held from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm on January 24th at the funeral home. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dina Karpinski, who was not only a special caregiver but became “like a granddaughter“ to Mary. Thank you also to the entire Anchor of Hope Hospice team for their excellent care and support over the last 6 months of Mary’s life. A very special tribute goes to CNA Tatum for not only caregiving but as Mary said, “being my special friend” and to Nurse Heather for her support and guidance.
