Steven Michael Caylor

Steven Michael Caylor, 75, of Terre Haute, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at Union Hospital in Vigo County. He was born on February 4, 1951, in New Castle, Indiana, a son of the late Lewis Russell and Clenna Marie (Kneidel) Caylor. Steve was a graduate of Marshall High School in Marshall, Illinois. Following graduation, he proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, following in the footsteps of his father. He later earned a bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University. Steve possessed an enduring curiosity and a genuine thirst for knowledge. A lifelong learner with a wide variety of interests, he was always eager to understand how things worked, master a new skill, or take on another challenge. Throughout his life, Steve enjoyed photography and was an accomplished athlete. He played semi-professional tennis and was also an avid golfer. His competitive spirit extended to shooting sports, which he especially enjoyed alongside his son, Brandon. Steve was a longtime member of the NRA and became a licensed Olympic shooting coach and trainer. The many interests and experiences Steve shared with Brandon were made even more meaningful by the exceptionally close bond between father and son. Steve raised Brandon as a single father, and being his dad was among the greatest joys and most cherished responsibilities of his life. Their relationship was built upon years of shared adventures, mutual respect, and a deep love that remained at the very heart of who Steve was. Steve loved nature, animals, and spending time outdoors. He enjoyed taking road trips, riding his motorcycle, and seeing where the open road might lead. For several years, he also raced motorcycles professionally. His talents and interests led him into several remarkable careers. For many years, Steve worked as an engineer for the Budweiser IndyCar Team, traveling extensively throughout the United States and around the world. He later worked as a software engineer for several companies, a profession well suited to his analytical mind and love of learning. Steve was highly focused, goal-driven, and never afraid of a challenge. Beneath his competitive nature and dry sense of humor was a thoughtful and caring man. He was a devoted caregiver and someone who could be counted on when he was needed most. Those left to cherish Steve’s memory include his only son, Brandon Caylor of Terre Haute.
