SFC Craig A. Van Brunt (US Army Retired), age 66, of Pendleton, died Sunday, May 29, 2016 from injuries sustained in an accident while riding with his comrades in Rolling Thunder Indiana Chapter One’s, Ride to the Wall, in Washington, D.C. He was born November 16, 1949 in Medford, Oregon, a son of the late Ira William and Marjorie Zeta (Meyers) Van Brunt. Craig served in the US Army for 22 years of active duty service with one tour in Vietnam, 1969-1971. Following his retirement from the military he completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology at Indiana Wesleyan University. Craig also served as a police officer in different communities for several years. He enjoyed riding with Rolling Thunder, the Patriot Guard Riders and was a strong supporter of The Wounded Warriors Project. He was a war movie enthusiast and also enjoyed watching MASH and John Wayne. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Denise (McGrady) Van Brunt; a son, Jacob (wife: Audrey) Van Brunt of Muncie; two daughters, Julie Van Brunt of Erlanger, KY and Jodie Van Brunt of Greenfield; grandchildren, John William Van Brunt, Layla Stumpf, Brenda Stumpf and one due to arrive in September; a sister, Barbara Porter of DeFuniak Springs, FL and his mother-in-law, Aileen McGrady of New Castle. A memorial service honoring Craig’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, June 4, 2016 at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 523 S. Merrill St., Fortville, Indiana, with Deacon Frank Klauder officiating. Burial will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery with military honors conducted by a contingent from the US Army. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
