    Daniel F. Magers

    June 11, 1927 - February 29, 2016

    Daniel F. Magers, 88, of Englewood, FL, formerly of New Castle, passed away Monday, February 29, 2016 at Harbour Manor in Noblesville after a brief illness. He was born June 11, 1927 in Elwood, a son of Lawrence B. and Mary Alice (Cunningham) Magers. Loving husband of 29 years to the late, Margaret E. “Peggy” (Hudson), whom he married on August 14, 1954. Dan graduated from Wendell L. Willkie High School in 1945 and went straight into the Army during WWII until the wars end. Dan managed the Morris 5 and Dime Store on Broad St. in New Castle, then transitioned to Modernfold Purchasing Department, formerly New Castle Products, for 40 years. Dan was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church and choir, Knights of Columbus, member and past president of New Castle Lions Club, First Nighters, Ambassadors of Goodwill Singing, United Nations Day Committee Member, Industrial Chairman of Henry Co. First Aid Fundraisers, New Castle State Hospital Board Member, one of the founders of the Boys Club in New Castle and participated on the Raintree Co. Arts Council. Left to cherish his memory are a son, Doug Magers of New Castle; a daughter, Mary Kay (husband: Kelly) French of Sulphur Springs; his loving grandchildren, Starri Gulley, Jacob (wife: Shannon) Gulley, Andrew (wife: Amy) Humes and Vanessa French; great-grandchildren, Riley Hernandez, Brooklynn Gulley, Taylor Certain, Jazmyn Gulley, Masyn Humes, Garrett Humes and Gracelyn Humes; a sister-in-law, Bonnie Magers of Jamestown, NY and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and beloved wife, who passed away on July 26, 1983, he was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters. Dan was an avid sports fan, but especially of Notre Dame, IU, Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Rays. He loved the holidays and acted as Santa Clause for Modernfold, the State Hospital and his wonderful family. Dan enjoyed his retirement in Florida for 23 years and being with his family. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 4, 2016 at St. Anne Catholic Church in New Castle. Burial will follow at St. Anne Catholic Cemetery The family will receive friends from 4 – 8 p.m. on Thursday at Sproles Family Funeral Home. Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Anne Catholic Church or New Castle Lions Club. You may send the family a personal condolence at www.sprolesfamilycares.com.
