Eva G. (Merrill) Sweitzer, 81, of Alexandria and formerly of Sayre, PA, went home to be with the Lord on the afternoon of Thursday, March 17, 2016 at Community Hospital in Anderson. She was born October 3, 1934 in Athens, PA, a daughter of the late Charles and Alberta (Arnold) Merrill. Eva’s mother died when Eva was nine years old, and she was raised by her step-mother, Helen (Lindsay) Merrill. Eva graduated from Athens High School in 1952. She married the love of her life, Paul Sweitzer, on July 23, 1955, and together they enjoyed nearly 61 years of marriage. She worked as a typesetter for many years at the Evening-Times in Sayre, PA and at The Train Station Restaurant. Eva also worked in the lunch room at the Tioga Center Christian School in Tioga Center, NY and in recent years at Ousley’s Harvest Gardens in Alexandria. Eva served on the Election Board of Bradford County, PA for many years. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting, and anything involving her family. Eva loved people and was known as “Grams” to all. She attended the Muncie Pilgrim Nazarene Church with her family. Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband, Paul W. Sweitzer; two daughters, Tina (husband: Roger) Fox of Alexandria and Jill (husband: Kenneth) Dove of New Creek, WV; five grandchildren, Brenda (husband: Shane) Gardner of Newport News, VA, Heather Fox, Esq., Melissa (husband: Ben) Carmichael, Jonathan Fox, and Elizabeth Fox all of Alexandria; three step-grandsons, Kenneth (wife: Ana) Dove of Leesburg, VA, James Dove and Isaiah Reynolds both of Keyser, WV; seven great-grandchildren, Allison Gardner, Breanna, Dallas and Braden Carmichael, Drew Gardner, Clayton and Marissa Carmichael; two step-great-grandchildren, Kamila and Kameron Dove; a sister, Eileen (husband: Jack) Shedd of Sayre, PA and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and step-mother, Eva was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Abigail Renee Fox; four brothers, Raymond Merrill, Clayton “LaVerne” Merrill, Wallace “Wally” Merrill, and Ralph “Red” Merrill; a sister, Lucille Young and a step-sister, Louise Merrill. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 21, 2016 at the Pilgrim Nazarene Church, 811 East 26th Street, Muncie, with Pastor Scott Turner officiating. Burial will follow in the IOOF Cemetery in Alexandria. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4 – 8 p.m. at the church and an hour prior to the service Monday.
