Gordon L. “Gordie” Broyles, 72, of New Castle, died Saturday, June 2, 2012 at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis following a brief illness. Gordie was born September 12, 1939 in Henry County, a son of the late Gordon Keith “Buck” and Opal (Moore) Broyles. Gordie was a 1958 graduate of New Castle Chrysler High School. He married the love of his life, Phyllis “Lum” (Ford) Broyles, on September 3, 1958. He started New Castle Plumbing in 1972 and retired after 36 years in October of 2008. However, anyone who knew Gordie knows he was never far from his building aka Grandpa’s Workshop. You were almost guaranteed to see Gordie on his riding lawnmower if you ever drove down 300 South on a warm day or almost any day for that matter. He would throw up his hand (his signature wave) and smile at friends passing by. Gordie was a member of the Eagles, Elks and Moose Lodges and the Sons of the American Legion. He was an avid fan of racing and owner of Broyles Motorsports. He loved working on his old cars and golfing. Gordie loved spending time with his grandchildren, especially his “baby dolls,” and his family. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Phyllis Broyles; two sons, Tony (fiancé: Karol & family) and Terry (wife: Melinda) Broyles both of New Castle; three grandchildren, Troy (wife: Shanna) Broyles, Morgan and Ashley Broyles all of New Castle; two great-grandchildren, Hattie and Lucie Broyles of New Castle; three sisters, Kaye Troxell of Middletown, Annette Meador of Ohio and Skeeter Mathis of Chucky, Tennessee; three brothers, Ronnie Broyles, Keith Broyles and Kenny Dale Melton all of New Castle, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and stepfather, Kenny Melton, he was preceded in death by a baby sister, Sherri; two nieces, Krissy Ford and Gina Pierce, and a great-grandson, William “Baby Will” Broyles. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at Sproles Family Funeral Home with Pastor Jerry Ingalls and family friend, Jeff Sparks, officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 – 8 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.
