John M. Dodrill, 89, of Knightstown, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 18, 2019, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born April 10, 1930 in Logansport, Indiana, a son of the late Lavoyda and Anna Fay (Staley) Dodrill. John graduated from Logansport High School in 1948. He married the love of his life, Virginia Ruth Fry, on December 24, 1949. John worked for Muehlhausen Spring Factory for 15 years and then purchased a farm. He loved farming and also did construction in between his work on the farm. They moved to Greenfield in the fall of 1976 to be the caretakers of Covenant Foundation College. He often said the best years of his life were those he spent at CFC. John served as Head of Maintenance and also as Dean of Men. John was a faithful servant for the Lord, and hadn’t missed Sunday School for 57 years. He taught Sunday School for over 50 years, played in the orchestra, and drove a church bus for 27 years, He grew up in the Logansport Nazarene Church then later attended the Pilgrim Holiness/Wesleyan Church in Logansport. In Greenfield, they attended the Church of the Bible Covenant. For 40 years, John served on the general boards of the Church of the Bible Covenant and ICHA, the International Conservative Holiness Association. Music was a big part of John’s life. He loved singing and playing the bass viol, bass guitar, ukulele, mandolin, and accordion. He always enjoyed Sunday nights at the farm, after church, where they hosted friends and family with food and lots of singing. He and his wife were song evangelists for several years. In his spare time, John enjoyed hunting and fishing. Those left to cherish John’s memory include his wife of 69 years, Virginia Dodrill; five children, Rev. Marc (Melody) Dodrill of Indianapolis, Becky (Ed) Hanawalt of Logansport, Deborah Garrison of Sebring, FL, Marsha (Tim) Taylor of Lake Placid, FL, and John (Tina) Dodrill of Greenfield; 14 grandchildren, Matthew (Michelle) Dodrill, Luke (Yvonne) Dodrill, Misty Dodrill, Trampas (April) Hanawalt, Trisha (Matt) Mancini, Sarah (Scott) Libertore, Anna (Cameron) Menzie, Elizabeth (Robert) Prendergast, Travis Taylor, Emily Greenhalge, Johnathon (Oriana) Dodrill, Jordan (Lauren) Dodrill, Nathan Dodrill, and Olivia Dodrill; 29 great-grandchildren, Tori, Hunter, Alexia, Abbi, Arica, Annie, Gabe, Tanner, Colton, Joshua, Keygan, Salem, Averi, Brodie, Cameron, Chance, Cason, Emmett, Aidan, Josiah, Acacia, Robert Jr., Charlee, Barrett, Toby, Malachi, Leah, Shanti, and Eva; two great-great-grandchildren, Leeyah and Brynlee; a sister, Sylvia Macy of Bedford, and several nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Emmett Garrison; brothers and sisters, Lavoyda Dodrill, Jr., Frank Dodrill, Frances Wallace, Irene Dodrill, Rodney Dodrill, Nina Price, Cecil Dodrill, Catherine Holmes, and Daniel Dodrill. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, August 23, 2019 at the Buddy and Jane Perry Tabernacle, 4485 N. Fortville Pike, Greenfield, with Rev. Marc Dodrill officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown. Friends may call from 4 - 8 pm. Thursday at the Tabernacle and one hour prior to the service Friday.
