Leland E "Lee" Shattuck
November 15, 1931 - December 26, 2020
Leland E. “Lee” Shattuck, 89, of Shepherd, Michigan, passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday, December 26, 2020 surrounded by his loving family at his daughter’s home in New Castle, Indiana. He was born on November 15, 1931 in Shepherd, Michigan, a son of the late George and Edna (Cobb) Shattuck. One of 18 children who grew up on a farm, Lee was inventive and could make anything out of nothing. He was a hard worker. For 21 years, he served as the sexton for Salt River, Coe Township, and St. Vincent DePaul Cemeteries where he dug graves by hand. He also roofed many barns around Isabella County every summer, then drove a school bus for Shepherd Public Schools during the winter. Leland married the love of his life, Maryln Kennedy, on March 27, 1954 and they enjoyed 54 years of marriage until her death on August 5, 2008. Lee was a fun loving, happy person who enjoyed being silly and playing games, especially with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Whether it was letting his grandchildren pull him out of his recliner, including them in mixing the batter for his prized pancakes or letting them steer his beloved tractor he made time with his family a fun experience. He raised large gardens and was a great cook, renowned for his homemade salsa, ice cream, and maple syrup. Lee most enjoyed time spent in the woods, hunting, collecting maple sap from his 80 -100 buckets, cutting wood, and fishing. He also loved poetry often reciting it to his family. Lee was grounded in his faith and was a 50 year plus member of the Wesleyan Holiness Chapel in Mt. Pleasant, MI, where he served as Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, and song leader. He also served on the district board. Those left to cherish Leland’s memory include five children, Shirley (Stan) Petty of New Castle, IN, Darlene Petty of Shepherd, MI, Leland “Doug” (Barbara) Shattuck of Williston, ND, MaryLee (John) Baker of Anderson, IN, and Janiece (Jerry) Cooper of Frankfort, IN; 15 grandchildren, Kay (Dale) Beard, Tim (Chasey) Petty, Bob (Adrienne) Petty, Chris (Charyl) Petty, Joe (Jessica) Petty, Crystal Petty, Nick (Lacie) Petty, Megan (LaMorris) Crawford, Shauna Shattuck, Chantal Shattuck, Talon Cooper, Keegan Cooper, Constance “C.J.” Baker, Kallee Cooper, and Maverick Baker; 19 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Cecil Shattuck, Donna Miller, Florence Aungst, Harold “Mac” (Helen) Shattuck, and Coreen Otto; a sister-in-law, Joyce (Harold) McQueen; two brothers-in-law, Bill (Judy) Kennedy and Dick (Carol) Kennedy, and many nieces and nephews.
