Mary M. Akins, 89, of New Castle, went home to be with the Lord early on the morning of Monday, February 22, 2016 surrounded by her loving family. She was born May 22, 1926 in Albany, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Roland and Hadia (Neal) Guffey. Mary retired from Henry County Hospital after 20 years of employment as a nurse’s aid. She was a long-time member of the Southside Church of Christ in New Castle and enjoyed quilting, crocheting and visiting with her friends in her apartment. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Blenda Clark of New Castle; three grandchildren, Lora (husband: Richard) Dye, Shawn York (fiancé: Thomas Carpenter) and Dwight (wife: Brandy) Martin all of New Castle; seven great-grandchildren, Chase York, Miranda Brown, Austin, Aaliyah, Kaylynne, Alyssa and Landon Martin; a great-great-grandson, Jaydin Michael Remy; brother, Odell (wife: Pat) Guffey of Marion; half-brother, Ezra (wife: Virginia) Smith of New Castle; half-sister, Barbara (husband: Herman) Riggs of New Castle and several nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Norman E. Akins; a sister, Emerine Guffey and five brothers, Dudley, Russell, Junior, Cornel “Dick” and Cordell Guffey. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 25, 2016 at Sproles Family Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Green Hills Memory Gardens.
